If Orange Was A Place. This is a 5 track EP by the queen of the REBEL GANG, THE LEADING VIBE & phenomenal singer, songwriter & producer, Temilade Openiyi Popularly known as TEMS. It was released to digital music streaming platforms on Wednesday September 15th, 2021. It debuted at Number 74 on iTunes U.S Chart, was featured on popular music platform APPLE MUSIC’s “UP NEXT”, was made the cover of APPLE MUSIC’s "R&B NOW" playlist and instantaneously climbed the charts especially to the top spot of APPLE MUSIC’s “TOP 100 ALBUMS: NIGERIA” as lovers of her music across Nigeria and the world were excited for the project & were delivered massive hits from track 1 to 5. The stars are eventually aligned in place for Tems as hours after the release of this project, RCA Records announced her addition to the label under "Since '93/RCA Records".

This project’s release transcends with the musical, lifestyle & creative culture/movement among the Nigerian youths delving into unique, different or alternative styles, patterns & sounds shifting away from AfroBeats & traditional African style, and this culture is referred to as “Alte” in Nigeria. The sound of Tems music from the voice, the beats and everything else in between has something divine, supernatural or spiritual in it that awakens the mind, gets you in a happy mood and lifts your spirit higher and we have witnessed this from her singles to her first EP “For Broken Ears” to this newly released one “If Orange Was A Place” and even to hit songs like ”Tales by Moonlight” with SDC (ShowdemCamp) , “Essence” with Wizkid & Justin Bieber, to “Peace” with Mannywellz and even the Certified Lover Boy, Drake’s “Fountain” which she was featured on. This project has just one feature and that is the Sonder lead/ Lost Boy, Genius and Singer extraordinaire, Brent Faiyaz who is on Track 2 titled “Found”..

If Orange Was A Place is a highly spiritual project which blends Jazz, Pop, RnB/Soul & Afrobeats to create the Magic that invokes something inside of you that makes you find your purpose, to answer “who am I” and why am I here” which she says is “Manifesting as Tems”.

Track 1(Crazy Tings)

ree

This is a mid tempo Pop & RnB/Soul song & she starts off this project with this song which sets the tone for the magic that awaits ahead. This track was Produced By Guilty Beatz & Written By Tems. It was originally released on 10th September, 2021. She starts sayi All you do is lie and lie and lie, All you do is try and try and try, You don't even know the kind of things, But you try to tell me all these thing”. She talks about needing time and peace, also needing space some days because she just trying to do her thing and get bread. She talks about how a guy she was with, just needs someone to deceive and he tries to make her think she’s the one for him. She goes on to ask “don’t you see you're not everything? “Because she knows that he’s not the one for her as crazy things are happening. She goes on to dip us into the oil of her sensational vocals singing the chorus “crazy tings are happening, crazy tings are happening, if you need somebody's craze, You fi chop somebody's craze “. Tems says he knows her “well well well” and his trying to “tell tell tell” to make her run insane, but he knows she’s not the same, she just thinks she can do better, then finishes off with the chorus and a sprinkle of oil to anoint us with her magical voice.

Track 2(Found)

Tems features Brent Faiyaz on this track. This track was Produced By Guilty Beatz & Written By Tems. This is a mid-tempo Jazz & RnB/Soul song about finding yourself especially in a love which is difficult. Tems says “people always try to get involved, I feel like I'm done, don't know where to run. People always trying to take a bite out of my mind. If you need a fight, maybe we could start”. She says she feels like she might just be coming undone and asks him to tell her why you can’t be found as it’s so unreasonable, but she knows him & knows love is a difficult life. Afterwards, she asks “maybe we should take it to the streets?” (Meaning fight or dig out mysteries in their relationship, especially on social media in recent times) then says “Basically, I might not be weak. Basically, I might not be falling. Basically, I might be used to this”.

Brent Faiyaz enters saying “Before this gets out of hands, no more distance, let’s just dance I'll mind my manners, Won't take advantage, Trust I can manage that, then he asks if she can picture that, then goes on to say “I don’t know who you been dealing with but I Guarantee that you ain't been with this” because if so, she would have forgotten about the past, so he assures her he’ll mind his manners before it gets out of hands, to cut the distance and dance without taking advantage. Track 3(Replay)

This is a mid tempo groovy tune that has a blend of Caribbean/ Afro type instrumentals, RnB/Soul & Jazz-like feels with the serene yet exciting vocals of Tems that made me put it on replay as it had me coming for more. This track was Produced By Jonah Christian & Written By Tems. It has a based on true-life experience narrative but yet has a tickle & tingle that gets me dancing all through the 3minutes of the track. Tems begins this by saying her voice is a mystery but people are always trying to diss her and get in her way, but they can’t even get to ruin her day with their bad vibes. She goes on to say we should

“Ride the wave of my history I've been distant to keep my distance Goodbye to a boring life I like to seek but I'm never in sight Even though I'm the type to ride I like to care but e never reach fight Swinging my waist like you never did see And then I roll like I really get baked And you can't believe what you heard me about me It's the magic for me They keep trying to reach me, yeah, yeah”

Well, magically they still keep trying to reach her; she makes them weep until they run insane. As she gets lit day by day, her ways are on display now & she says one of these days she will shut them all down because it’s her time to shine, so put it (her music) on replay. She asks who is this guy that wants to try her, play her, break her and shake? Then says All this time that they want to break, take, pie and define her, she has been round the world and so when they call her she replies “boy, nah me they call”. She talks about how back then when she didn’t have friends and people condescend (treated her inferior), she didn’t stop and rest. Although, she could let them go, she really wants to show them that they can’t test her, even on days when they tried to arrest her. Tems says “But if you live a lie, there's no way you could get me”. She talks about her experience from getting arrested in Uganda because she “Pissed em off, they locked up in a celly. Then e shock dem when they see me on the telly” then she goes on to say she’s a vibe, that she didn’t come around just to make it, that she could shake the rules, but she would rather break it, as she doesn’t care for what they do and she could turn to let everyone try her because they can never get what is for her. Track 4(Avoid Things)

This track again has a based on true-life experience storyline and yet again has an inciting feel that gets you moving your body melodiously to the sound of the beats and her soothing vocals. This track was Produced By Guilty Beatz & Written By Tems. Tems says “In the morning when you’re not with me, I feel you in the depths of mind, I found it in deep coming through is all I ever want to do” but she falls in the steps of humans and it’s all on her lover, now it’s onto him. She caresses us musically with the chorus telling us that’s why she tries to avoid things, but there’s no one else and it makes her mad so she tries to resolve things to involve him, but he doesn’t want to be sorry. She asks him to “Page me on the beeper, babe. I need a request, babe” because she needs a reason to wait for her lover while he’s relaxing, then goes on to ask that he takes her away because she’s “on a wave today”. She rolls her waist and goes crazy, while her minds awake and it gives her a migraine (strong one-sided headache) playing his mind games, because he’s like a cold place (undecided or unsettled mind) which she doesn’t need and if he is not hers, then they are just wasting time “Until a new day” (this feels like a new dawn or eventually finding a new lover). She goes on with the chorus again then says “Badman” wants to do her, cry, play mind games, and act crazy and she needs to be saved from this cycle that’s why she tries avoid things. Listen below on Spotify.

Track 5(Vibe Out)

This is the last track of the project and I must say like the saying she eventually saved the best for last as this song had me wishing I could twirl my waist like a female as I vibed and danced vigorously till my phones fell off my hands and my screen got cracked, regardless nothing could kill the vibe. This track was Produced By Guilty Beatz & Written By Tems. This is a very articulate well crafted feel good song with spiritual feels, energetic vibes & lyrics to match the vibe. I am not writing much about this amazing track because you are definitely going to vibe to this, so head straight & Listen to this spectacular track directly on Spotify with the lyrics also attached below.
